Friday 20 May

Throughout next week, we look forward to welcoming around 310  P7s from our associated Primary Schools. The visits will give our P7s opportunity to sample High School life ahead of them joining us in August. Regrettably, our usual 3 day visit for all P7s cannot go ahead in June this year as the eagerly awaited additional accommodation at Darroch will not be completed until later this summer.

  1. Our staff are actively raising the profile of our commitment to supporting the mental health of our young people and each other.  Mental health Lanyards are being allocated to staff who have completed training in mental health so that they can be easily identified by our students as staff who are willing to be approached by any young person in distress. As more staff are trained, we hope more will wear these lanyards.  Key adults will chat to students about this soon to raise awareness.
  2. Following concerns from members of the public,  our local Police Officers will have an increased presence in the vicinity of the school at peak times to address the issue of cars being dangerously parked near the school.  Those choosing to drop off or collect students are requested to park further from the school to avoid congestion and increased risk to others.
  3. All members of the JGHS community are invited to attend the online launch of the findings of the pioneering research project on the impact of Covid-19 on children of colour in Scotland. This will be a very important research project and tool informing research, policy and practice in Scotland. Well done to Ashaanka Sarma (2R1) who was on the advisory board. Details of how to join are here.
  4. Parents are invited to go online on Wednesday 1st June 2022 (630 – 730 Pm) to attend an Anti-Bullying Information Session for Parents & Carers in Edinburgh : The event is Free. Join us to find out more about what you can do to support children and young people affected by bullying. Organised by Edinburgh City Council in partnership with ‘Respectme’, Scotland’s anti-bulling organisation. This session for parents and carers will help you to understand more about bullying and how to respond effectively whether it's happening online or offline.
    1. How to register: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/339885114527 - this link takes you to the registration page.
  5. The following supports are being arranged in an attempt to deal with the misuse of social media - particularly with S1 pupils.
  6. As part of our continuing efforts to support students to make better decisions on how they use social media to interact safely and respectfully with others the following are being organised:
    1. There will be a presentation for S1 parents on how to support their children to use social media safely and responsibly. This will be delivered by a specialist police officer later this term. Dates and details as yet to be confirmed.
    2. Parents will be emailed a leaflet on supporting their children to use social media safely. This will be sent with the invitation to the talk.
    3. PC Mackenzie will deliver an in-depth assembly to S1 about cyber-crime and social media Friday 20th May.
    4. We are hoping this assembly will also be delivered to S2 and S3 pupils at a later date.
    5. PC Mackenzie will start running a “police surgery” at break and straight after school starting this Friday. Pupils could come and discuss their concerns/report issues directly to her.
  7. During this warmer weather all students are reminded to drink fresh water regularly throughout the day. All are requested to bring their own water bottles and to refill these at breaks or between classes. High energy drinks are not allowed in school.
  8. Now that home testing for COVID is no longer recommended we have a number of unused testing kits. The NHS has advised that we can offer these for free to staff / students / parents who might have vulnerable family members who still require tests. Please contact the school office if you wish to arrange to collect these from us.
  9. The recording of this week’s Parent Council meeting this week is now available on the PC website https://jghsparentcouncil.org/ together with the presentation by the school’s new Mental Health Coordinator, Nikki Graham. Nikki is looking for parents to collaborate in her work on supporting mental health in the school and discusses her plans in the presentation. If you would be interested, contact the PC on jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com or get in touch direct with the school.
  10. Updated Covid protocols. In line with Government Guidelines, Students, staff and visitors are encouraged to wear face coverings in communal spaces indoors but this is at each individual’s discretion. Given the increased roll and potential congestion  in our school, we are planning to retain our ‘one-way’ travel system at peak movement times.
    1. As you may be aware, Public Health Advice on COVID continues to evolve with the next significant changes taking effect from this Sunday (1 May). Fuller details can be found here.  In summary, the Stay at Home Guidance for people will be:
      1. Children and young people with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight  cough, who are otherwise well, can continue to attend their education setting.
      2. Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people, where they can. They can go back to school, college or childcare, and resume normal activities when they no longer have a high temperature and they are well enough to attend.
      3. Adults who have symptoms of COVID-19 and who have a fever or are too unwell to carry out normal activities will be asked to ‘stay at home’ whilst they are unwell or have a fever.  They will no longer be advised to take a PCR test.
      4. In other words, from Sunday 1 May public health advice will change to a ‘stay at home’ message replacing self-isolation for people who have symptoms or have tested positive.
    1. You should also be aware that as set out in https://www.gov.scot/news/end-of-the-highest-risk-list/ the Highest Risk List will cease on 31 May. These changes will be incorporated in a further update at the end of May.
  1. Well done to:
    1. Fraser Lupton (2R2) who competed in the 800m East Districts Championships at the weekend and finished a close second with a time of 2:02:67.
    2. Clara Dick (S1) and Abby Harbisher (S2) who were selected to play for the Scotland Girls U14's basketball team and competed in the Four Nations tournament in Dundee last weekend.
    3. Marcus Herbert (S1) who, on finding a bus pass belonging to a member of the public, made great efforts to contact the owner so it could be returned.
  2. Dates:
    1. 2 and 3 June Holidays
    2. 10 June Charity Guitar Gig at Usher Hall https://www.usherhall.co.uk/whats-on

Friday 13 May

Studies have long shown that reading and being read to can have positive impacts on mental health. It’s a good way to relax, unwind and enjoy time with others. So, that’s how we marked Mental Health Awareness Week this year. Staff came to the library on Wednesday at lunchtime to read stories, poetry, and passages from some of their favourite books. Colleagues and pupils came to enjoy the readings and they were delighted! Everyone thought it was a good experience, and we’re hoping to make it a regular event. My sincere thanks to all involved and especially to Ms Adenekan (one of two Librarians) for organising the event.

Over recent weeks, we have seen a gradual re-introduction of school excursions. I was really pleased to hear glowing praise for JGHS students who have been involved in working towards Duke of Edinburgh accreditation. Well done and thanks to all involved.

  1. Now that home testing for COVID is no longer recommended we have a number of unused testing kits. The NHS has advised that we can offer these for free to staff / students / parents who might have vulnerable family members who still require tests. Please contact the school office if you wish to arrange to collect these from us.
  2. A reminder from the Parent Council that the next meeting is on Tuesday 17 May at 7pm.  Nikki Graham, the school’s Mental Health Coordinator, will be talking about her post and mental health support at the school.  We will also hear from our Headteacher, Donald Macdonald, in his last Parent Council meeting before his retirement in the summer.  We will send out the link before the meeting via the school email.  Please email the PC at jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com by 12 noon on Monday if you have any questions or issues you would like included in the Headteacher’s update. For further information on the work of the PC please see https://jghsparentcouncil.org/ where you can also find recordings of previous meetings.
  3. Staffing: congratulations to Ms MacIver (Curriculum Leader for Gaelic Medium Education (GME)) who was appointed to the post of Depute Headteacher (GME) earlier this week.  We will shortly share an update of staffing changes across the school with all parents.
  4. We are grateful to Mr McGeary (Guitar Instructor) for giving JGHS students an opportunity to perform at a fundraising event at the Usher Hall on Friday 10th June. Some of the proceeds from this event will be used to fund more music therapy from Nordoff Robbins. The performers will include the James Gillespie's High School junior choir, a guitar orchestra featuring past and present pupils and much more. A huge cast of musicians performing rock, folk, classical and film themes! The evening will also include a tribute to our late friend Dave Leslie, a former head of music at JGHS. The ticket price (£18.15) includes a programme and booking fee, and due to some very generous sponsorship, every single penny goes to support charities. Tickets can be purchased at the Usher Hall box office: https://www.usherhall.co.uk/whats-on

Friday 6 May

The SQA exams are running smoothly – continuing best wishes and good luck to all who are involved.

  1. We are currently experiencing an increase in the numbers of younger pupils who are misusing online media to post inappropriate content about others. Edinburgh secondary school pupils are being targeted as part of a vile TikTok cyberbullying trend. The anonymous social media accounts, set up during the school Easter holidays, pick on pupils by leaving nasty comments – including those of a sexual nature. Accompanying the slurs are clues as to a pupil’s identity and even partial images of faces as peers are encouraged to guess their identity. Parents are requested to discuss this trend with their children and contact the school if you have any concerns so that appropriate action is taken to educate and support all involved.
  2. The next Parent Council will be held on Tuesday 17 May at 7pm.  Please email the PC at jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com if you have any questions or issues you would like included in the Head Teacher’s update. If you would like to catch up on previous meetings, they are on PC website at: https://jghsparentcouncil.org/ We will send out the link to join the meeting via the school email nearer the time.
  3. All pupils in S1-S3 to take part in a survey about their health and wellbeing. The findings will help our local authority to understand the needs, strengths and possible concerns of children and young people, which will help plan future improvements to local services. Please look out for a letter which you should receive that will provide you with more detailed information about the Census, and provides you with the opportunity to let us know if you don’t wish your child to take part.
  4. On Monday 9 and Monday 16 Modern Languages will welcome P6 students (approx 150 per day) from our associated primary schools for a day of language learning at JGHS.

  1. Congratulations to:
    1. Sam Macnamara who achieved Grade 1 Saxophone with merit
    2. Daniel Chowings who achieved Grade 3 Piano with merit
    3. William Wardlow (classical guitar) and Carla Brunelli Bonnet (cello) who have been accepted into the Junior Conservatoire at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
    4. Several talented guitarists who took part in a concert last Friday in Duddingston Kirk and in doing raised the magnificent sum of £305 which will help a Ukrainian family settle in the Portobello area. The Kirk minister has already sourced free accommodation for the family for the next two years and the money we raised will help them buy groceries upon their arrival. The pupils who took part  were Alexandre Sabino Hunt, William Warlow, Elizabeth Mole, Chloe Stirling, Flora Mitchell, Dylan Daunt, Ula Brooke’s, Flynn Conroy and former pupil Oliver Coombs. Our pupils performed in ensemble and Flora, William, Alexandre and Oliver played solos to an appreciative audience.

Friday 29 April

It was lovely to welcome students and staff back to school after the recent Easter holiday. The brighter weather with the prospect of much more to come, lifts the spirits as we emerge from the challenges we all faced through 2 years of COVID related restrictions.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 10.  This is 24 fewer than the last week of term. This is the last week I will report on actual numbers as COVID testing is no longer expected.

  1. The SQA exams started on Tuesday of this week. All the very best to students and families involved in exams over the next 5 weeks.
  2. We are required by the City of Edinburgh Council, to have an annual review of all of our pupils heath conditions and medication kept or carried in school. Please look out for emails relating to this from Welfare and complete and return as soon as possible, it is incredibly important we hold up to date information on medical conditions. If you have not informed us of your child’s medical conditions please contact me at kirsten.donnelly@jamesgillespies.edin.sch.uk
  3. For those who missed the HPV vaccine in the last week before the Easter Holiday, Child Health are arranging some mop-up clinics primarily for the following students:
    1. S5-6s
    2. S4s who aren’t attending school next year
    3. Please call their office on 0131 446 4082 to arrange an appointment. Please be assured that students who missed the vaccine will be recalled next year if still at school.
  4. A number of families have been touch to enquire about the school’s approach to enrolling students who have arrived with us from Ukraine. My apologies for my tardiness in responding to individuals so, having just received the City of Edinburgh’s updated approach to ‘Supporting Ukraine and its People, here is the link to the relevant information. Thank you to all of our families who supported our fundraising appeal and are involved in other ways to support those who have been affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

  1. Congratulations to:
    1. the S1 English class who entered the First Minister's Reading Challenge this year. Ms Brown and Mrs Fairhurst challenged them to 'Beat the Teacher' and try to read their own height in books! Although Mrs Fairhurst managed a respectable 85cm, some members of the class recorded over 150cm - a special mention to Sophie and Daisy for topping their respective heights. Alongside this, and lots of other fun challenges throughout the year, what we have seen is a love of reading becoming embedded in the lives of these pupils.
    2. And sincere thanks to Munzir Bushara Mirghani Arshin in S1 who is currently fasting for Ramadan which ends on Sunday 1 May. To celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Monday, he brought in a variety of home baked goods and sweets for everyone in his class, packed in little personalised  boxes with everyone’s initials and a message. The class were absolutely delighted and I hear that his twin, Mazin is also doing the same this morning. It's such a huge and generous for the family to make, so thanks on behalf of all the delighted pupils and staff who received their special gifts.
    3. Anna Green (S6) who continues to excel in the pool, swimming for Warrender Baths Performance and the Scottish National Team. Following a stellar performance at the British National Swimming Championships Anna is now age ranked top three in the UK for her backstroke events. Anna won two golds and a silver at the Scottish National Championships and is delighted to have been selected to represent GB at the Junior European Championships in Bucharest in July.
  2. Dates:
    1. 2 May Monday Holiday
    2. 3 May Staff In-service Training
    3. 4 May Students resume

To all who are celebrating the end of Ramadan this weekend, Eid Mubarak.

Wishing all a gorgeous long weekend.

Friday 8 April

As another busy and productive term draws to a close I’d like to thank everyone in our school community for your contributions to the continued running of the school.  In particular, thanks to our students who have stayed focused and positive throughout what has continued to be a most challenging time. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all students in S4, 5 and 6 all the very best for the exams that start the week after the Easter Holiday. As this is the last full week for our S6 and a few in S4 and S5 who are moving on to chapters new, I’d like to wish them every success and happiness for the future. Very best wishes also to Mrs Ann Fraser (Classroom Assistant) who leaves us after 29 years’ service and to Ben Lewis (Head of Maths and currently Acting DHT) who takes up his new role as DHT at Queensferry High School after the Easter break.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 34.  This is 2 more than last week.

  1. I will email parents and students in the latter half of the Easter Holidays with news of any changes to our COVID arrangements at JGHS.
  2. The aim of Gàidhlig Beò is to give our GME pupils opportunities to use their Gàidhlig in a social setting while doing fun activities. We want to provide leadership, teamwork and creative opportunities as well as the chance to link up with GME pupils from other parts of Scotland. Over the next few weeks we have several exciting opportunities which are open to GME pupils in S2 and S3 including watersports, climbing, biking and an overnight camp with GME pupils from Glasgow. There are mentoring opportunities for GME pupils who are currently in S4 and S5. If you have not already signed-up your child and would like to find out more or register an interest, contact Mr MacLellan: callum.maclellan@jamesgillespies.edin.sch.uk
  3. Over the last few weeks, students sitting SQA exams will have been finding out their estimates in discussion with their teacher. Teachers have also been working hard where possible to gather final pieces of robust evidence to contribute to your child’s estimate. A summary of estimate bands will be sent to students and parents/carers during the week beginning 18 April.
  4. The Parent Council wants to hear from parents about how online parent consultations with teachers have been working, and your views on whether we keep this format or go back to in-person meetings.  What has worked for you and what has not? In the future, what sorts of school events are best held in the school and what can be done online? Our survey will be running over Easter and can be completed here: Parents' Evening Survey It will only take 5 minutes and we want to hear from as many parents as possible.
  5. For those who missed the HPV vaccine this week, Child Health are arranging some mop-up clinics primarily for the following students:
    1. S5-6s
    2. S4s who aren’t attending school next year
    3. Please call their office on 0131 446 4082 to arrange an appointment. Please be assured that students who missed the vaccine will be recalled next year if still at school.
  6. Thank you to all who have contributed to our Ukraine fundraising appeal. The total raised is £2,820 and rising. All donations via ParentPay.
  7. Covid protocols
    1. Anyone testing positive for a Lateral Flow Test (Home Test) should immediately self-isolate in line with current Government Guidelines.
    2. Taking regular lateral flow tests and getting vaccinated are among our best mitigations to limit the spread of Covid. You can find out where to get lateral flow and PCR tests on the NHS website. The vaccination booster programme has expanded, so you may now be eligible to book yours. But, again, the NHS website has the information you’ll need.
    3. Please continue to access the NHS Guidance so that you will know when you should get tested for Covid19.
  8. Easter Basketball Camps are as follows:
    1. S1&2 Camp from 1-3pm each day

    2. Isaac Murdoch (S4) who received two awards on Monday -  Chief Scout Platinum Award (Chief Scouts Platinum Award | Scouts) and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. He completed this with the support of Meadows Explorers Scouts, including volunteering weekly with Beavers, an expedition in the Pentland hills and getting his local community involved in planting a wildflower meadow to increase biodiversity
    3. Aliyah Faulds (S2) who was successful in an audition she did earlier this year and has passed into the NYCOS National Girls Training Choir. She will therefore be attending a residential choir event in the Easter holidays and singing in a concert at the RNSO centre in Glasgow on April 16th.

Friday 1 April

Earlier this week, I was privileged to attend a launch event for Bilingualism Matters. At JGHS we are proud of and enriched by having so many languages and cultures in our school community. The latest research confirms that there are many advantages to us learning and regularly using different languages. Therefore, families are strongly encouraged to use different languages in the home. Whilst in previous generations, it was argued that focusing on one language gave students the best opportunity to progress across a wide curriculum, we now know that the opposite is true. Latest estimates indicate that at least 50 languages are spoken within our school community.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 32.  This is exactly the same as last week. Given the rapidly evolving guidelines, I will email parents and students in the latter half of the Easter Holidays with news of any changes to our COVID arrangements at JGHS.

  1. Parents may find this link on our school website to a variety of family supports to be of interest: https://www.jamesgillespies.co.uk/parents/support-for-families/
  3. Students who attended the Climate Strike on Friday 25 March can have their absence recorded as authorised if their parent/carer emails the school to register approval for their child’s attendance at the strike.
  4. Details of our in-school Easter revision programme were emailed to parents and students earlier this week.
  5. Details of exam leave arrangements from Tuesday 26 April for S4,5 and 6 are being completed and will be shared with students and families next week.
  6. Thank you to all who have contributed to our Ukraine fundraising appeal. The total raised is £2,680 and rising. All donations via ParentPay . We will keep this fundraiser open until 8 April.
  7. The Junior Maths Challenge for S1/S2 pupils will take place on Wednesday 27th April and will, most likely, to be online after school. If your child would like to take part, then please email Ms Dolan on ashling.dolan@jamesgillespies.edin.sch.uk  or ask them to speak to their maths teacher. Pupils can also attend maths club on Tuesday lunch times in 2.07 to practise some problems and find out more information about the competition. To get an idea of the type of questions, you can find past paper questions online here: https://www.ukmt.org.uk/competitions/solo/junior-mathematical-challenge/archive
  8. The HPV vaccine will take place next week, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April. Students report in at the Forum for this at the appointed times. The schedule has been shown to students in Key Adult time this week. It has also been emailed to students and can be viewed at the forum. Please remind students to wear a vest or t-shirt on the day and to take their water bottle to keep hydrated. S5-6s can go at any time, preferably on Wednesday please.
  9. Covid protocols
    1. Please ‘phone or email the school to inform us if your child tests positive for COVID. Include test date and whether it was a LFD (Home test) or PCR.
    2. Anyone testing positive for a Lateral Flow Test (Home Test) should immediately self-isolate in line with current Government Guidelines.

Friday 25 March

The lovely sunshine over the past few days has lifted spirits and was most welcome. It has been great to see classes working outside in the fresh air.

Thank you to all who have contributed to our Ukraine fundraising appeal. The total raised is £2,440 and rising. All donations via ParentPay . We will keep this fundraiser open until 8 April.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 32 This is 6 fewer than last week and serves to remind us that COVID is still with us so we must remain vigilant.

The most recent reports suggest that the wearing of Face coverings will continue after the Easter Break in communal spaces in High schools. I would request that all pupils arrive in school with re-usable face coverings; these will help reduce the amount we are contributing to landfill.

  1. We have noticed a dip in students attendance in recent months so we see this as an opportunity to review our attendance procedures and how we communicate with parents. Look out for more information on this next week. It goes without saying that all should be aiming for full attendance at school unless there are genuine reasons for absence.
  2. The recording of this week’s Parent Council meeting is now available on the PC website https://jghsparentcouncil.org/. The meeting included a presentation on the maths curriculum and updates and questions on Active Schools, Covid rules, parent consultations and other issues. For your diary, the next PC meeting will be on Tuesday 17 May.
  3. A number pf parents have enquired as to Scottish Government Health and Well-being (HWB) survey. Our Health and Well-being School Improvement Team have been using an annual JGHS bespoke HWB survey over the last few years which is used to determine benchmarks and evidence improvements. Therefore, discussions are ongoing as to how best to move forward with this central requirement and our own current practices.
  4. Senior Recital Evening: Wednesday 30 March - 4:00pm-5:00pm This year we are offering students from our S3-S6 Music classes the opportunity to perform items from their programmes in a relaxed and informal setting. The recital concert will take place in the Performing Arts Theatre on Wednesday 30 March from 4:00pm - 5:00pm. Unfortunately, due to current COVID-19 guidelines, we are unable to invite family and friends into school to attend the concert. However, all JGHS pupils and staff can come along and support our talented musicians. This is a free event, and we would encourage all students who are preparing for NQ practical exams to take part. It is a great opportunity to gain valuable performance experience to an audience. Pupils can sign up using the form posted onto all S3-6 Music class Teams.
  5. Edinburgh Council has set up a group for parents with children with ASN in mainstream schooling, with representatives from each school. The Parent Council would like to hear from parents who have issues they would like raised or discussed – please email jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com if you would like to be put in contact with our rep on the group.  There is further information on the last meeting at https://jghsparentcouncil.org/
    4. Please continue to access the NHS Guidance so that you will know when you should get tested for Covid19.
    5. If/when, there are changes to COVID mitigations affecting schools I will write to all members of our school community and give you as much notice as possible.
  7. Easter Basketball Camps are as follows:
    1. S1&2 Camp from 1-3pm each day
    2. On Tuesday & Thursday Girls camp from 3-5pm
    3. Monday, Wednesday and Friday 3-5pm U16&18 camp
    4. you can access all by following link below https://the-crags-centre.class4kids.co.uk/camps

    3. Nora Trew-Rae (5R1) who performed on Saturday 19 March in the Glasgow Grand Opera Cup - she was named the runner up in the competition and “highly commended”. Nora attends the Junior Conservatoire at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on Saturdays, where she studies singing - the competition involved all RCS Juniors vocal students (up to 19 years) so is an amazing achievement to be recognised so highly in this competition.
    4. Anjalie Khan (1S3) who will be performing Violin as part of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland's Junior Orchestra in the coming weeks. Anjalie will be attending the residential rehearsal course from Friday 1 - Tuesday 5 April, before performing in the Junior Orchestra's Spring Concert on Tuesday 5 April at The Albert Halls in Stirling.
    5. Nico Aspinall (S1), Dylan Hynd (S1) and Ellen Hynd (P6, James Gillespie’s Primary School), completed a 5K night run at the Kelpies in Falkirk on 19th March 2022 to raise money for the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.  Their initial fundraising target was £1,200 but they have raised an incredible £1651 so far for this amazing charity, who transform the experiences of children and young people in hospital.  The charity is particularly close to their hearts as Dylan had a serious accident in July 2020 and spent 6 weeks recovering at the hospital.   To read more about their story visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hynd
    6. Jessica Taylor (S3) who was 34th in the Inter-County Cross Country Championships in Loughborough last week.  This race is the best kids in the UK competing in Cross Country running and she has another year left competing in that age group.  Jess was also 7th in the Scottish National Road Race championship at the weekend and again has another year at that level.
    7. Sam Shannon (4S1) has been selected to represent Scotland for the U17 Squash Team at the European Team Championships in Eindhoven . He has been capped for  Scotland before at National Level but this is his first European Cap.

My quote for the week: "‘When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.’’ (William Wordsworth)

Best wishes to all for a bright weekend packed with sunshine.

Friday 18 March

A huge thank you to all who have contributed to our Ukraine fundraising appeal. At the point of emailing, the total raised is £1,085 and rising. All donations via ParentPay.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 38 This is 1 more than last week and serves to remind us that COVID is still with us so we must remain vigilant. I am pleased to see so many of our students (80%+)continuing to wear face coverings in classrooms. This is helping to reduce levels of anxiety amongst those who feel vulnerable and assists in reducing the number who become infected with COVID and have to self- isolate.  Given that we are still experiencing high numbers of positive cases within the JGHS community, I anticipate that we will be continuing with face coverings and all other mitigations until the Easter Holiday.

  1. Our school counsellor is keen to accept donations for counselling resources for JGHS and the local primaries.  Examples include: Fidget toys, Poppits, useable play doh, Kerplunk, Guess who, Frustration, Connect 4, Uno, Dobble, Dominos, Jenga, Playing cards large plastic storage boxes and any large storage bags. Any such donations gratefully received and may be dropped off at reception.
  2. On Wednesday of this week, a BBC film crew were with us to film Mr Jennings, one of our Psychology teachers. The BBC are developing a feature length documentary about his family’s contribution to medical research into dementia. Their morning with us involved a film crew accompanying him into school on Wednesday to observe him teaching a few Psychology classes.
  3. We will have a lost property stall just outside the forum next Friday, 25th March during break. Any items not collected will be donated to charity. We have lots of keys so, if you have lost a set please come and look.
  4. For those who missed the teenage booster vaccine (for S3 upwards), Child Health are arranging some mop-up clinics. Please call their office on 0131 446 4082 to arrange an appointment. Students who missed the vaccine will be recalled next year.
  5. An urgent call for any outstanding HPV vaccine forms to be returned as soon as possible please. Child Health cannot guarantee that there will be sufficient time for self-consent on the day.
  6. A reminder that the next Parent Council meeting is on Tuesday 22 March at 7pm.  There will be an update on Active Schools by our Active Schools Coordinator, Eliot Ambrose, and a presentation by Faculty Head, Ashling Dolan, on the Maths curriculum.  We will send out the link before the meeting via the school email.  Please email the PC at jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com by 12 noon on Monday if you have any questions or issues you would like included in the Head Teacher’s update. For further information on the work of the PC please see the PC website https://jghsparentcouncil.org/ where you can also find recordings of previous meetings.
  7. Wednesday 16th March was Young Carers’ Action Day. The aim was to raise awareness about young carers nationwide and this year’s theme was isolation.  This theme was chosen by young carers to draw attention to their situation which often leaves them unable to join in activities enjoyed by their peers. This link above gives information about young carers. Please contact Fiona Oatman or Richard Sievwright for any further information. Admin@jamesgillespies.edin.sch.uk

Friday 11 March

Earlier today, I met with 4 student reps from our ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ working group to discuss how our school community can help the Ukrainian families who are now faced with such heartbreak and hardship following the invasion of their country. Look out for more information on what we are planning and how to contribute next week.

The number of pupils testing positive for Covid over the past 7 days was 37.  This is 11 more than for last week and serves to remind us that COVID is still with us so we must remain vigilant. I am pleased to see so many of our students (80%+)continuing to wear face coverings in classrooms. This is helping to reduce levels of anxiety amongst those who feel vulnerable and assists in reducing the number who become infected with COVID and have to self- isolate.

  1. It’s reassuring to see so many of our students and staff choosing to travel to school in more environmentally friendly ways. Travel by bicycle, scooter, walking or running to school are all examples of the type of travel we are keen to promote.
  2. The Modern Languages Department, in partnership with the Korean Education Centre UK, is pleased to say there are still spaces to sign up for Korean Club. Please see the flyer with details and joining instructions as emailed earlier this week.
  3. The next Parent Council meeting is on Tuesday 22 March at 7pm and will include a presentation by Faculty Head, Ashling Dolan, on the Maths curriculum.  We will send out the link before the meeting via the school email.  Please email the PC at jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com with any questions or issues you would like included in the Head Teacher’s update. Information on the PC and recordings of previous meetings are available on the PC website at: https://jghsparentcouncil.org/
  4. A small group of S4-S6 parents is needed for an online meeting on Monday 14 March at 7pm (about an hour) for research on the impact of Curriculum for Excellence on attainment, subject choice and student experience.  The project is being run by Stirling University who want to examine the experience of parents of supporting their child to make subject choices. If you would be interested in participating, please contact the Parent Council on jghscouncilcomms@gmail.com. Further information is available on the project website https://curriculumproject.stir.ac.uk/ and on Twitter https://twitter.com/CAPDStirling
